Camp Runoia is one of the best girls sleepaway camps in Maine
Runoia is proud to have been one of the first girls sleepaway camps in Maine—and in the entire country! Camp Runoia was founded in 1907 on Great Pond in Maine with just 7 campers. Today, Runoia welcomes hundreds of campers each summer, while still providing an incredible opportunity for girls to grow.
We offer 3- and 6-week sessions, as well as our 10-day Harmony Land Camp for younger campers.
We are a down-to-earth, tight-knit community
At Runoia, we are a girls sleepaway camp where there is little competition or focus on status. You won’t find girls bringing a big bag of makeup to camp. In the spring, returning campers write letters welcoming new campers to Runoia. The Directors know the names of every girl at camp. More importantly, our directors take the time to understand what each girl needs in order to thrive while at camp.
Why go to sleepaway camp in Maine?
Maine has a long history of sleepaway camps, and has some of the best camps in the country. At Camp Runoia, girls get the full Maine camp experience: swimming in beautiful Great Pond, spending an afternoon at the beach on Maine’s coast, and the opportunity to explore Acadia National Park.
What makes Runoia unique among girls sleepaway camps in Maine?
At Runoia, we balance camp traditions with our progressive values. Some of our most popular activities are some of our oldest: sailing, archery, horsebacking, and basket-weaving! We live in traditional, cedar-shingled cabins and spend most of our time outside enjoy the pines trees and clear water of Great Pond, just like the original 7 campers did in 1907. But, our values are progressive. We are committed to creating an inclusive camp community where all campers feel they belong. We welcome campers with a diversity of racial, socio-economic, gender, and religious backgrounds. Our staff undergo significant training in inclusion and belonging, and we have the support of our Alumni Diversity Advisory Committee, who help us improve our policies and practices every year.
