Camp Runoia is an authentic, down to earth, caring sleepaway camp.
The Belgrade Lakes Region is Central Maine’s premier lake area for recreation. We are located an hour from the coast and an hour from various mountain ranges. Our camp is nestled on nearly a mile of shore line on the south side of Great Pond.
Great Pond is the largest of the Belgrade Lakes – a watershed containing 14 lakes and over 5000 acres of conservation land. The Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance and the Belgrade Lakes Association are instrumental in making conservation land and hiking trails available, as well as monitoring the water quality of our lakes.
Maine is home to three small prestigious liberal arts colleges – Bates, Bowdoin, Colby- as well as the renowned University of Maine, the focused College of the Atlantic and a variety of other great schools. Many of our campers apply to Maine schools after being drawn to the area as campers at Camp Runoia.
E.B. White wrote about our lakes, “Peace and goodness and jollity.” His references in Letters of E.B. White to the Belgrade Lakes are numerous and indulgent. The Broadway production of On Golden Pond was penned on the shores of Great Pond by Ernest Thompson. L.L. Bean built a summer home on Great Pond and spent many a summer’s morning fishing on our lake. The characters of Belgrade -although not all famous – are indeed colorful, helpful and care deeply about keeping the magic in the region.
Seeking the outdoors and nature is prioritized by many families, especially city dwellers. Our camp is on a large and quiet lake and is revered by the story written on Great Pond “On Golden Pond”. The rustic shoreline, quiet evenings with loon calls, walk along our nature path or hike out to our Fairy Ring campsite makes you feel like you are in another world!
The great state of Maine, and specifically the Belgrade Lake Region, is full of vacation opportunities for you and your family. Our parent/family handbook lists great local inns and B&Bs and we would be happy to refer you to other fun things to do in Maine.
Our favorite local restaurants include The Village Inn in Belgrade Lakes, Maine Slates in Hallowell Maine, Riverside in Oakland, Maine. We are thrilled to announce the arrival of “Hello Good Pie – Bakery and Gourmet Food” in Belgrade Lakes village and our families always enjoy the local diner food at The Sunset Grill in the village as well! Our very favorite store is, of course, Day’s Store, right in the picturesque village of Belgrade Lakes. Camp Runoia in Belgrade Lakes, Maine – we are proudly “04918”

Camp Runoia is dedicated to all of its campers, providing a distinct summer experience that is packed with challenge, learning and fun. Activities are important, trips are important, campfires are important, singing is important but above all, at Runoia, CAMPERS ARE PARAMOUNT!
Our campers are kind, engaged, adventurous, inclusive and full of life. They come from all over the country and several countries outside of the USA. Each camper brings her own unique talents and personality that adds to the richness of cabin life and our community as a whole.
Campers at Runoia live in cabins outfitted with limited electricity and most have an attached bathroom with toilets and sinks. Shower Houses are sprinkled throughout camp and offer additional toilet facilities. Cabins are cozy buildings that soon feel like home as campers forge deep connections with their fellow campers and counselors. Cabins have ten to fourteen campers and three to four counselors. Cabin assignments are carefully planned and organized by the directors. Our cabins are an amazing place to spend a summer!
Since 1960 Camp Runoia has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association, complying with over 300 safety standards. ACA is Camp Runoia’s link to a global camping community and an opportunity to network professionally with peers and educators worldwide.
Runoia campers never forget.
Your Runoia friends are your family. Your camp friends become “sisters for the summer”and you may discover your camp friends are your closest friends in the world.
"Unstructured play time is part of our daily lives at camp. Living in an unplugged, face-to-face community allows campers to explore free play and people to people interaction throughout the day. "
